Check out guest blogger, Alison Martin, as she discusses the importance of candid communication.

Having a relationship with a person can be a warm and uplifting lifetime experience. But not all relationships go smoothly, and many don’t even last a few years. Certainly arguments and disagreements are expected among all couples. However, the key to success is often communication and respect.

One of the most difficult things for a couple is to acknowledge the weaknesses that they face as individuals and as a couple. Because being a couple involves two separate people coming together from two different worlds and lifestyles, there is often a good deal of work that needs to be done to balance out the differences.

Acknowledge the Work

The first step to making any long term relationship last, is acknowledging that there is a great deal of work that needs to be done on a regular basis to keep the relationship healthy. No relationship can sustain itself. Like all living things, it needs to be fed. (Yes, a relationship is a living thing—it just has two bodies, instead of one). That includes more than just feeding the love affair sweet things such as: candy, chocolate, favorite foods and romance. Real relationships require a healthy diet of love, work, and play as sustenance.

What Does a Real Relationship Mean?

A real relationship requires romance, friendship, mutual respect, equal work, equal rights, honesty and communication. One of the most important aspects of implementing all the other parts of a relationship is through honest communication.

This can be a lot of work for some people who by nature have a tougher time communicating. Communication is very important and is often the key. It can make all the difference in the world in how well a problem gets solved, how much time is enjoyed together, how work in the relationship is handled, and how love is shared. Couples who struggle with communication should find ways to enhance their communication skills as this is part of the very foundation of any thriving long term relationships success.

Candid Talk

Couples should learn that they are on a journey together, and just as if they were in the wild jungle together, the couple couldn’t survive if they didn’t communicate well, and work together. Skills of communication are built over time, and some communication skills must be learned as a couple. This is especially true because not all people have the same style of communication or comprehension of issues.

Part of learning how to work well with each other is making room for individuality. This is an important part of the relationship as makes success much more of a reality if it is respected and understood. Each person in the relationship needs to acknowledge and work on the reality that two people are in their intimate relationship, and each person has needs. Both people must be accepted as equally valid and important in order for there to be success. This is where communication becomes a vital role in accomplishing a healthy relationship. Skills such as compromise, understanding, support and nurturing all get fostered best through healthy communication. Of all the key issues, respect for each other is paramount, and communication is a key ingredient to hearing and validating and acting upon each other’s needs.
